Employee Assistance Programs

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a work-based intervention program designed to enhance the emotional, mental and general psychological wellbeing of allemployees and includes services for immediate family members. The aim of Employee assistance programs is to provide preventive and proactive interventions for the early detection, identification and/or resolution of both work and personal problems that may adversely affect performance and wellbeing. These problems and issues include, relationships, health, trauma, substanceabuse, addictions, financial problems, depression, anxiety disorders, psychiatric disorders, communication problems, legal and coping with change etc.


In today’s corporate set up, employee assistance programs are understood as an extended help to assist employees to plan their finances, health insurance and well being. Employee assistance programs, in real life situations are yet to help individuals overcome their day to day work related stress, balancing work and life, improving their productivity etc.


A recent study by the Canadian Centre for Addiction and Mental Health concluded mental illness resulted in more sick days among Canadians than any other chronic illness, costing the country's economy $51 billion annually in lost productivity.


Employee Assistance Programs in India, still need to focus on the basics of EAPs and accordingly it should be structured and delivered. EAPs if executed effectively, can translate to higher efficiency, productivity and quality, as well as lower turnover of valuable workers.


High levels of stress as well as low level chronic stress can lead to reduced job performance and work productivity. Job stress affects a person’s family well-being and familial stress affects a person’s work performance. Helping employees to effectively manage their stress is the need of the hour.


Employee Assistance Programs have proved themselves worldwide as an effective way toimprove individual and organizational productivity and health –if they are designed, managed, and evaluated appropriately. EAPs serve organizations and their employees in multiple ways, ranging from consultation at the strategic level about issues with organization-wide implications to individual assistance to employees and family members experiencing personal difficulties.


Lack of actual Employee Assistance Programs and its proper implementation at work place is responsible for a stressed life, stressed family and by large a stressed society. It is important to understand the basis of EAPs in an organizational set up. Though EAPs aim to help employees in dealing with health care concerns, financial and legal concerns, major life events such as parenting, birth and death, work relationship issues, but widely it is not accepted at an individual level. Assumption/perception being held as these EAPs are employer centric and not employee centric.
